Review by Greg Andrew:
This book is a must read for all horse lovers, past and present residents of Johnsonville, especially if you grew up in the area from the 50s through late 80s but any true blue New Zealanders will love it. His mischievous behavior back throughout his youth are stories that I can relate to as well as all my neighbourhood friends, I’m sure. Raiding orchards, slug gun wars, lighting fires, etc, etc. But of course the most exciting adventures came from riding horses. Memories of the barbeque and moonlight treks to the coast, the “Mad Mile”, the “Burn Paddock”, the fireside singalongs, all priceless.
From humble beginnings to a legend in the Ohariu Valley and Johnsonville community, Roy’s hard work and tenacity is evident in the successful development and operation of the Ohariu Valley Riding School, Indoor Arena and Country Club. His memoir of how all this came about including hard fought bureaucracy is a testament of a man who never gives up on a dream no matter how many challenges he faces.
